Between work schedules, children, and other obligations, sometimes it can seem impossible to maintain that partnership. And when problems arise, for some couples its healthier to divorce and go your separate ways, while for others, its a better choice to work on your relationship. If you want to stay with your partner but navigate the bumps in the road, there are proactive measuresâ€"from improving communication to infusing more romance in day-to-day lifeâ€"you can take to prevent divorce. Here are 13 ways to improve your partnership. Rule Out the Idea of Divorce Just toying with the idea that you might be better off outside of the marriage can put a major strain on the relationship, even if you never voice those thoughts. In fact, that thought alone can cause a major break in your motivation to make the marriage better. To combat this risk to your marriage, decide ahead of time that divorce is not an option. Making this commitment will help you focus on how you can make the marriage better and stronger, rather than thinking about what life might be like outside the marriage. Honor and Respect Your Partner People inevitably change over time and understanding, appreciating, and adapting to those changes is critical. To help remind yourself of the wonderful person you married, make a list of his or her best qualities. This exercise will help you remember why you fell in love in the first place. It also helps to vocalize how much you appreciate your partners quirks and eccentricities. Let your partner know every dayâ€"through compliments or thank yousâ€"that you appreciate all that he or she does. These little expressions are like deposits in the bank. You dont want to make withdrawals from your marriage without ever making any deposits. So, be sure you are doing things that honor your partner for who he or she is. Communicate Regularly In the age of smartphones, Netflix, and work-from-home lifestyles, its easy to get distracted and go days without having a real conversation with your spouse. Communicating openly about your life, interests, dreams, frustrations, and feelings is an important way to foster intimacy in a relationship. Likewise, its crucial that you listen to your partner voice his or her thoughts, too. Sometimes its helpful to set aside 30 minutes each day without interruptions where you can talk without any distractions. Share Financial Expectations and Budgets Many marriages are fraught with disagreements over finances. Often couples bring different expectations about money to a relationship and find it difficult to see the other persons perspective. Coming to an agreement on how to handle money together is a critical component of successful marriages. Agree on a budget  and an approach to debt and then live within your limits. For some, its important to differentiate between a need and a want. While both are legitimate, couples face problems if they try to fulfill all their wants without considering their budget. Likewise, its important to incorporate some flexibility in your budget to allow for entertainment, gifts, vacations, and other activities that help strengthen the marriage. Give Each Other Space One of the hardest things to balance in a marriage is the right amount of time to spend together. Too much can feel like smothering while too little can be interpreted as inattentive. So, when your partner needs space or a night out with friends, offer to watch the kids or run the errands so he or she can easily get that time. Its also important that you make time to spend with your partner. If babysitting issues or financial constraints make that difficult, plan a fun, cost-effective date night at home. The key is that you both are making a concerted effort to spend quality time together but allowing one another the space to have an outside community as well. Ditch the Sweatpants Its easy to get into a routine of being overly casual, especially if youve been with your partner for many years. But an easy way to rekindle romance is to think back to those early days of datingâ€"preparing for date night with an at-home manicure, getting a fresh shave and haircut, or choosing a fun outfit. And while that may sound superficial, there are other ways to remind yourself just how attractive and energized you are. Keeping up with your physical fitness boosts confidence and well-being, and can double as a way to spend time with your partner, whether its taking a new workout class, training for a 5K, or prepping healthy meals together on Sundays. Keep Up the Courting Another way to keep the flame burning in a marriage is to continue courting your spouse. Make time for a date night every week, even if its to get ice cream or cook a new recipe together. If money is a concern, trade babysitting with another couple, or put the baby in a stroller and walk around the mall or go to the park. It also helps to continue doing the things you did when you were dating. Leave your partner little love notes where he or she will find them. Make them coffee in the morning. Buy their favorite snack at the grocery store. Many couples report that these types of small gestures help them feel like newlyweds. Forgive Quickly Often marriages begin to fall apart when one person holds a grudge. In fact, research has shown that feeling contempt toward your partner almost always festers and can lead to divorce if its never resolved. As a result, try to forgive your partner as quickly as possible. Remember that forgiveness is just as much a gift you give yourself. Holding a grudge takes up mental and emotional space and almost always impacts your health and stress levels. Opt for a forgiving spirit and reap the positive benefits, which range from better sleep to stress relief. And, if you have wronged your partner in some way, be sure to sincerely apologize and ask for forgiveness. Truly listen to what your partner has to say and why he or she is upset to understand how to do things differently in the future. Dont Try to Control Your Partner   Give your spouse room to be the person he or she is and learn to collaborate on decisions. In healthy marriages, both partners have mutual respect for one another and dont demand their own way. They also give their spouse the freedom to come and go without having to ask permission. They dont monitor or control one another. Be sure youre collaborating with your partner on any big decisions, from spending to raising children. Partners who try to control one another often become emotionally abusive or display signs of financial abuse, which frequently leads to divorce. Get Help Before Its Too Late If youre still having challenges or you fear that divorce might be imminent, consider counseling or couples therapy. Often your or your partners workplace will have access to an employee assistance program (EAP), where you can receive some initial help or get a referral. You also could consider meeting with a trusted religious leader if you share faith and then move beyond that if needed. Developments in recording technology in the 20th century brought an extensive increase in the variety of music that people had access to. It also played a major role in how music could be heard. These inventions gifted the public with new ways that music could be enjoyed more easily and more often. It also influenced composers to experiment with new genres and styles. One aspect that was provided to the public through inventions and developments in music technology was a major convenience. They no loner needed to leave the comfort of their home to spend money on a live performance. One particular invention that pushed this development was the radio. This invention was the first known device to allow mass communication; not only nationally, but internationally as well (Wyman). As early as the 1800’s, multiple people began experimenting with wireless signals and communication (CITE). In 1910, this wireless system developed to be referred to as the name â€Å"radio†(CITE). This night, because we’d had such a successful day-the van was completely full; Kyle would have little space-and because Ian thought I looked tired, we stopped early. The sun had not set when I returned to the van with the plastic key card. The little inn was not very busy. We parked close to our room, and Jared and Ian went straight from the van to the room in a matter of five or six steps, their eyes on the ground. On their necks, small, faint pink lines provided camouflage. Jared carried a half-empty suitcase. No one looked at them or me. Inside, the room-darkening curtains were drawn, and the men relaxed a little bit. Ian lounged on the bed he and Jared would use, and flipped on the TV. Jared put the suitcase on the table, took out our dinner-cooled greasy breaded chicken strips I’d ordered from the deli in the last store-and passed it around. I sat by the window, peeking through the corner at the falling sun as I ate. â€Å"You have to admit, Wanda, we humans had better entertainment,† Ian teased. On the television screen, two souls were speaking their lines clearly, their bodies held with perfect posture. It wasn’t hard to pick up what was happening in the story because there wasn’t a lot of variety in the scripts souls wrote. In this one, two souls were reconnecting after a long separation. The male’s stint with the See Weeds had come between them, but he’d chosen to be human because he guessed his partner from the Mists Planet would be drawn to these warm-blooded hosts. And, miracle of miracles, he’d found her here. They all had happy endings. â€Å"You have to consider the intended audience.† â€Å"True. I wish they’d run old human shows again.† He flipped through the channels and frowned. â€Å"Used to be a few of them on.† â€Å"They were too disturbing. They had to be replaced with things that weren’t so†¦ violent.† â€Å"The Brady Bunch?† I laughed. I’d seen that show in San Diego, and Melanie knew it from her childhood. â€Å"It condoned aggression. I remember one where a little male child punched a bully, and that was portrayed as being the right thing to do. There was blood.† Ian shook his head in disbelief but returned to the show with the former See Weed. He laughed at the wrong parts, the parts that were supposed to be touching. I stared out the window, watching something much more interesting than the predictable story on television. Across the two-lane road from the inn was a small park, bordered on one side by a school and on the other by a field where cows grazed. There were a few young trees, and an old-fashioned playground with a sandbox, a slide, a set of monkey bars, and one of those hand-pulled merry-go-rounds. Of course there was a swing set, too, and that was the only equipment being used currently. A little family was taking advantage of the cooler evening air. The father had some silver in his dark hair at the temples; the mother looked many years his junior. Her red brown hair was pulled back in a long ponytail that bobbed when she moved. They had a little boy, no more than a year old. The father pushed the child in the swing from behind, while the mother stood in front, leaning in to kiss his forehead when he swung her way, making him giggle so hard that his chubby little face was bright red. This had her laughing, too-I could see her body shake with it, her hair dancing. â€Å"What are you staring at, Wanda?† Jared’s question wasn’t anxious, because I was smiling softly at the surprising scene. â€Å"Something I’ve never seen in all my lives. I’m staring at†¦ hope.† Jared came to stand behind me, peeking out over my shoulder. â€Å"What do you mean?† His eyes swept across the buildings and the road, not pausing on the playing family. I caught his chin and pointed his face in the right direction. He didn’t so much as flinch at my unexpected touch, and that gave me a strange jolt of warmth in the pit of my stomach. â€Å"Look,† I said. â€Å"What am I looking at?† â€Å"The only hope for survival I’ve ever seen for a host species.† â€Å"Where?† he demanded, bewildered. I was aware of Ian close behind us now, listening silently. â€Å"See?† I pointed at the laughing mother. â€Å"See how she loves her human child?† At that moment, the woman snatched her son from the swing and squeezed him in a tight embrace, covering his face with kisses. He cooed and flailed-just a baby. Not the miniature adult he would have been if he carried one of my kind. Jared gasped. â€Å"The baby is human? How? Why? For how long?† I shrugged. â€Å"I’ve never seen this before-I don’t know. She has not given him up for a host. I can’t imagine that she would be†¦ forced. Motherhood is all but worshipped among my kind. If she is unwilling†¦Ã¢â‚¬  I shook my head. â€Å"I have no idea how that will be handled. This doesn’t happen elsewhere. The emotions of these bodies are so much stronger than logic.† I glanced up at Jared and Ian. They were both staring openmouthed at the interspecies family in the park. â€Å"No,† I murmured to myself. â€Å"No one would force the parents if they wanted the child. And just look at them.† The father had his arms around both the mother and the child now. He looked down at his host body’s biological son with staggering tenderness in his eyes. â€Å"Aside from ourselves, this is the first planet we’ve discovered with live births. Yours certainly isn’t the easiest or most prolific system. I wonder if that’s the difference†¦ or if it’s the helplessness of your young. Everywhere else, reproduction is through some form of eggs or seeds. Many parents never even meet their young. I wonder†¦Ã¢â‚¬  I trailed off, my thoughts full of speculation. We also have found other vocab study resources – from videos to apps to browser plug-ins – to help you study in the way that works best for you. Read on and conquer SAT vocabulary! First Things First: Don’t Overdo Vocab Before we jump into the resources, we have an important word of advice – don't overdo vocab studying for the SAT. SAT Vocabulary is based on understanding words in context, in subjects ranging from literature to social science to science. In other words, you won’t be expected to know the definition of a random word with no outside information. Instead, you have to figure out what a word means based on the information around it. So the best use of your study time is to learn high-value, medium-difficulty words, not to cram your head with lots of obscure vocabulary. Be wary of any prep programs that promise to teach you â€Å"SAT Vocabulary,† especially ones with super long word lists (500 or 1000 words). This is a waste of your time! These programs are still based on the old SAT, which tested more obscure vocabulary. That said, if you struggle with vocabulary in general, it can be good to do some separate vocabulary study to help you tackle the reading passages, some of which will be more difficult than on the old SAT. For example, take a look at this question from an SAT practice exam: Test question from SAT Practice Test 1. If you don’t have a clue what the word â€Å"ambivalent† means, it might be hard for you to tackle the sentence and figure out what ambivalent means in this context. (For the record, Merriam-Webster defines ambivalent as â€Å"having a mixture of opposing feelings.†) So how can you figure out if you need to do some dedicated vocabulary study, or if your existing vocabulary base is sufficient? Take a practice SAT, focusing on the Reading and Writing sections. When grading your Reading answers, if you missed half or more of the vocab questions (the ones that begin â€Å"as used in line __, the word ____ most nearly means†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ) then you should make studying vocabulary a priority. Furthermore, when correcting the other Reading questions, try to figure out why you got them wrong. (Learn more about getting the most out of practice tests.) If you notice you’re missing questions because you misunderstood a word or phrase, either in the passage or the question, it could also be useful to get some SAT vocabulary under your belt. Finally, keep an eye out for the â€Å"precision† questions on the Writing section. These questions have you compare different word choices, for example â€Å"therefore,† â€Å"thus,† â€Å"moreover,† and however,† and pick the one that works best in the passage. Again, you need to be able to understand how a word’s meaning works within a sentence to get these right. If you take the practice test and only miss a few or none of the Reading vocab questions, and none of the Writing precision questions, and your wrong answers are due to different issues (timing, misunderstanding the passage’s larger meaning, etc) then do not spend time studying vocab! Remember that spending hours memorizing vocabulary is not an efficient use of study time for the SAT. Start by learning one word list, then take another practice test. If you make an account, you can use their website and also their mobile apps for iPhone and Android – meaning you can study your SAT vocab on the go! This app is handy because as you review words, you can star cards that you are struggling with, allowing you just to focus on your weak spots. You can either make your own card sets focusing on problem words or search pre-made lists. For example, here’s the Kaplan top 100 list from above! I personally used this app all the time in college for my language classes and found it very helpful. I highly recommend using it to study your SAT vocabulary. ProfessorWord This is an app for your web browser that highlights SAT/ACT vocab words from articles and web pages and defines them for you. This is really cool because if you like to read articles from publications like The New York Times, The Atlantic, or Wired, it’s likely you’re encountering SAT vocab words in your daily reading anyway. This app just goes through and points them out so you don’t miss them! This is a great way to learn words in the context of your day-to-day web browsing. Especially given the SAT's focus on understanding vocabulary in context, I highly recommend using ProfessorWord to find and study vocabulary. Before you click on the word to see the definition, quickly jot down (either on a piece of paper or in a NotePad document) what you think the word means, based on how it's used in the article. Then, check out the official definition. Compare your guess with the official definition and see how close you got. If you do this exercise a few times a week, you will improve your ability to figure out a word's meaning based on its context, plus, you will generate a list of SAT words to study. Win win! Vocab Ahead If you like words explained out loud, check out the videos at Vocab Ahead. These videos are really helpful for students who learn best by hearing rather than reading, or by having concepts explained to them. Head to the â€Å"Study Room† tab and select â€Å"SAT 300 Common† from the drop down menu. The videos for each word last about 30 seconds, and incorporate a definition and at least one example. This is also a great resource if you have a particular word you are struggling to understand based on its dictionary definition alone. Vocab Sushi If you like online quizzes, Vocab Sushi is a website that lets you test your vocab knowledge with quizzes and teaches vocab words by using them in sentences from actual news stories. This is a great way to learn new words through real-world examples, rather than just dictionary definitions.
